WATCH: Dave Starke to enchant at Tea on the Terrace

This year's Tea on the Terrace will feature eShowe-based musician Dave Starke as one of the performing artists

The annual Dice (Do I Care Enough?) Tea on the Terrace event is celebrating its 10th milestone year on Saturday, 7 September, from 10am to 12:30pm at Thembela Venue.

This year’s event will feature eShowe-based musician Dave Starke as one of the performing artists.

A seasoned performer known for his unique blend of Folk, Blues, Indie-Rock, and Latin Jazz, Starke draws inspiration from legendary figures like Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash, as well as influential artists such as Josh Ritter and Jackson Browne.

He describes his guitar as ‘a fragile wooden box, strung and tensioned to near breaking point – fundamental, honest, and often downright scary’, a metaphor for the human experience.

With over 20 years in live entertainment, his soulful performances promise to add a unique depth to the event.

Starke’s journey began in Cape Town’s vibrant band scene during the late 90s. He discovered his true calling in songwriting and acoustic performance after relocating to KZN in the early 2000s.

His rural Zululand base has profoundly influenced his musical direction and performance style. He identifies as a ‘staunch minimalist’, known for his delicate guitar technique, warm baritone voice, and skillful whistling.

Career highlights include writing and performing in ‘Cohen – A Tribute’, which enjoyed six consecutive sold-out performances in Cape Town.

He composed the soundtrack for the South African feature film ‘The Killing Floor’, which premiered at the Durban International Film Festival in 2017.

Starke gained recognition on the first season of ‘The Voice South Africa’ (Episode 6) and has performed at notable events such as the White Mountain Folk Festival in Central Drakensberg.

He also staged a successful cabaret tribute show at The Rosebank Theatre in Cape Town and continues to perform at numerous weddings each year.

Currently, Starke is pursuing an MA in Music and the Environment from the University of the Highlands and Islands in Scotland (online), reflecting his commitment to both his art and academic growth.

His foundation in music was established during his schooling and further enriched by a degree in Drama and Classical Studies from the University of Cape Town.

Starke’s artistry and charm are set to bring a touch of class and musical sophistication to the Tea on the Terrace event, ensuring a truly memorable occasion.
