Schools reopen for third term

The third term is 11 weeks long with only 53 actual school days

With the third term only 11 weeks long, schools are being urged to intensify efforts to ensure teaching and learning are uninterrupted.

Teachers and non-teaching staff returned to school on Monday, while learners were back on Tuesday after the three-week break.

While the new term is relatively shorter, with only 53 actual school days, newly-appointed Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube says it is a critical one in the school calendar as it is the last quarter before learners sit for their final examinations.

“We, therefore, urge school communities to mobilise the rest of society to ensure effective teaching and learning take place so learners can achieve their full potential.

“Schools should ensure the set work for the year is completed and that revision is done in good time. Nothing beats proper and timeous preparation,” said Gwarube.

She further appealed to communities to support schools and ‘refrain from causing disruptions to the school schedule as this could have a devastating impact on learning outcomes’.
