High alert for KZN with strong wind forecast

Fire warning issued amid higher temps, stronger winds across KwaZulu-Natal

KZN disaster management teams are on high alert following a forecast of strong and damaging wind in parts of the province today (Monday).

Residents in the Zululand, King Cetshwayo, Ugu, uMgungundlovu, uThukela, Amajuba and iLembe districts are urged to exercise extreme caution and prepare for bad weather conditions.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast wind speeds of up to 70 km/h, with gusts exceeding 80km/h.

The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says ‘strong winds, coupled with high temperatures, have created ideal conditions for runaway fires’.

“Residents are warned about the dangers posed by these fires and are urged to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their properties,” said the department.

Safety measures

– Secure any loose items around homes and properties to prevent them from being picked up by the wind

– Remain indoors whenever possible to avoid the risk of injury from flying debris and to stay safe from the high winds

– Residents should avoid any non-essential travel to reduce the risk of accidents on the roads

Preventative measures for fires

– Avoid starting any open fires, as they can quickly spread out of control

– If you spot a fire, report it immediately to the local fire department or emergency services

– If you live in a rural area, consider creating firebreaks around your property to help prevent the spread of fires
