NSRI issues full moon spring tide alert

Warning for anglers, boaters, paddlers and sailors amid upcoming full moon spring tide

Bathers, boaters, paddlers, anglers and coastal hikers are urged to exercise caution around the South African coastline in light of the upcoming full moon spring tide.

This warning was issued by the NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) on Thursday, with the full moon spring tide expected to peak on Saturday.

“Spring tide causes the daily two high tides to be higher than normal and the two low tides to be lower than normal,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

“The effect will already be noticeable around the coastline, increasing in intensity towards the full moon peak on Saturday and gradually declining in intensity towards the middle of next week.

“Spring tides pose a potential hazard to bathers around the coastline, especially during the outgoing tide.

“With school holidays now in full swing, we appeal to coastal water uses to be cautious during this full moon spring tide phase and the effect it has around the coast.”

Lambinon said rough seas brought on by winter storms could contribute to hazardous conditions.

He urged boaters, paddlers and sailors to wear life jackets at sea, to carry the relevant safety equipment and to download the free NSRI SafeTrx app.
