WATCH: Mtubatuba forest fire contained

Blaze flares up in the vicinity of the Nordale landfill site in Mtubatuba

Firefighters were on scene at a forest fire in Mtubatuba early this week after the blaze flared up in the vicinity of the Nordale landfill site.

The cause unknown at this stage, the fire broke out on Monday afternoon in a section of forest that was felled earlier this year after security concerns raised by Nordale residents.

The fire spread south in the municipal forest close to the suburb, and further into parts of a Mondi-owned plantation.

No injuries or damage to property were reported, and both municipal and Mondi firefighting teams battled the blaze.

On Tuesday morning, the area’s ward councillor, Ntokozo Mthimkhulu said the fire had not been completely extinguished, with firefighters closely monitoring the situation.

“The two teams worked hard from Monday afternoon to put out the fire, and the situation was made more risky because of the strong wind. But the teams monitored the situation closely because there was a concern that the fire could change direction and head to people’s homes,” said Mthimkhulu.
