IFP president voices concerns over financial support criticism

IFP president responds to election campaign funding criticism

The IFP president, Velenkosini Hlabisa says he is gravely concerned about the criticism his party has received after receiving R20-million in financial support from the Oppenheimer family.

The financial injection was made to support the IFP election campaign.

Hlabisa raised these concerns during the official opening of the Big 5 Hlabisa Driver’s Licence Testing Centre and Mnyamubambile electrification project handover on Friday.

“I fail to understand why people are against this financial support because other political parties are getting financial support from the same family. I think those who criticised us for accepting this sponsorship want to see us fail to even host election rallies.

“My worry is when this family supported Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi to build the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in uMlazi, south of Durban, nobody criticised him,” said Hlabisa.

The Oppenheimer family donated R5-million towards the construction of MUT in 1978.

“This donation did not come with any conditions,” said Hlabisa.
