WATCH: Chaos continues at uMfolozi TVET campuses

Students protest over non-payment of NSFAS funds, among other issues

Student demonstrations at uMfolozi TVET college continued this morning (Monday) as protest action moved to its Ritcteck Campus in Richards Bay.

Starting at the eSikhaleni campus on Thursday, the protest is mainly about NSFAS-funded students not being paid their allowances for the February and March.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer this morning, uMfolozi TVET College marketing manager Bhekani Ndlovu said the strike action was likely to spread across other campuses as the issues were ‘common’.

“Today’s strike happened just before our CFO could deliberate on his meeting with NSFAS for which he was promised that these payments would be made this week,” said Ndlovu.

Ndlovu further stated that the students’ demonstrations were directed at the right place as the institution was the one that had direct contact with the financial aid board.

In a statement, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) said the process of the payment of allowances to TVET colleges commenced on 6 March and they will provide further details on this process within the coming week.

NSFAS further called upon all institutions, both universities and TVET colleges, and students who have not been onboarded on the NSFAS portal to do so immediately, as this was a requirement to ensure accommodation allowances are paid without any delays.

It said failure to onboard students would result in delays in the payment of accommodation allowances.
