WATCH: City water disaster shuts down University of Zululand

Ongoing water outages cause havoc in parts of City of uMhlathuze as municipality increases tanker distribution

The ongoing water crisis in the City of uMhlathuze has led to the abrupt suspension of University of Zululand operations.

According to city communications manager Bongani Gina, they are aware of ongoing challenges affecting water supply in the eSikhaleni, Felixton and Dlangezwa areas.

He said this stemmed from a 600-metre water pipeline leak that occurred on Sunday.

“Additionally, there is a valve-related issue within the Dlangezwa water reticulation network that is currently being addressed,” said Gina, adding that the team is on site addressing the issue.

“In collaboration with the University of Zululand, residents and other affected stakeholders, we have increased the deployment of water tankers to ensure interim water supply needs are met.”

After university management met with the Student Representative Council (SRC), it resolved to suspend academic activities at its KwaDlangezwa campus from Wednesday until Friday.

“The municipality has made efforts to address the situation by delivering water to the campus this morning and evening, however, given the current conditions, conducting academic activities would not be feasible or conducive for effective learning,” said management.
