WATCH: Taxi route stand-off causes traffic chaos in Empangeni

Hundreds of Empangeni commuters affected by taxi association dispute

A confrontation over taxi routes in Empangeni caused traffic chaos on Ngwelezana Road this (Tuesday) morning as operators from two opposing associations blocked the busy route.

Traffic was backed up from Empangeni Rail to the Ngwelezana bypass amid a reported stand-off between the Ngwelezane and B-Rank taxi associations.

According to Santaco (SA National Taxi Council) King Cetshwayo chairperson Mduduzi Makhunga, there have been tensions between the two associations for some time.

“The issue began this past weekend and as Santaco, we have asked for police and Department of Transport intervention to find an amicable solution as both parties have permits to operate on the route but they are still at loggerheads,” said Makhunga.

He said the situation is currently under control, with a meeting scheduled for all affected parties.

Traffic officials were on scene on Tuesday and the road was quickly cleared with traffic free-flowing once again.

This busy commuter route has become more in-demand since the closure of Durnford Road in December for crucial bridge repairs.
