Coal exports lowest in 30 years

This was revealed during a virtual presentation of the coal terminal’s performance

Coal export volumes through Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) continue to decline, reaching 47.21 million tonnes this past year – levels that were last recorded in 1992.

This was revealed by RBCT CEO Alan Waller during a virtual presentation of the coal terminal’s performance results on Thursday.

The export volumes are more than two million tonnes down from the 50.35 million tonnes achieved in 2022.

The terminal, along with Transnet Freight Rail, cited various challenges on the north corridor impacting the critical coal export line that have affected RBCT’s throughput.

These include security, locomotive availability and infrastructure related issues.
