Toll fee resumption at N2 Tongaat ramp

Motorists using the Tongaat River bridge on the M4 north of Durban should prepare for the return of toll fees

Those motorists using the N2 to travel in and out of Tongaat, who have enjoyed the benefit of no toll fee collection will have to start forking out again as of 15 January.

This follows the reopening on 14 December of the Tongaat River bridge on the M4 north of Durban.

“The M4 Tongaat bridge suffered major damage during the devastating floods of April 2022 and motorists had to use the alternative N2 national highway.

“The collection of toll fees on the N2 oThongathi north ramps were therefore suspended as per a Government Gazette issued on 17 March 2023.

“The bridge has now been reopened and access along the M4 has been restored.

“We will, therefore, resume levying the tolls once again on 15 January 2024 on the north ramps so these fees are able to maintain our national roads,” said Dumisani Nkabinde, Sanral Eastern Region manager.

“The Government Gazette with regard to the resumption of the levying of toll fees from midnight on 15 January 2024 at N2 oThongathi north ramps for all vehicles was published on 29 December 2023,” said Nkabinde.

The Government Gazette previously issued by the Department of Transport on 17 March 2023 also suspended the collection of toll fees at the N2 oThongathi mainline and south ramps, as well as the N2 uMvoti mainline and all ramps for all vehicles owing to the 2022 floods.

The toll fee collection on these roads resumed on 1 April 2023 in terms of the Sanral and National Roads Act.

“Road users now have a choice to use either the N2 or the M4 and, with the reopening we hope communities and businesses of Zimbali, Ballito, Salt Rock, Shaka’s Head and other locations within KwaDukuza Municipality can once again resume normal operations,” said Nkabinde.

N2 toll fees between Richards Bay/Empangeni and Durban for light vehicles are as follows as at 1 March 2023:

• Mtunzini mainline: R55.50

• Mtunzini south ramp: R46

• Mtunzini north ramp: R10

• Dokodweni ramps: R23.50

• Mvoti mainline: R16.50
