Christmas roadblocks lead to numerous arrests

SAPS members would continue to be out in force over the remainder of the festive season

Several people were arrested for a variety of offences during holiday roadblocks held over the Christmas weekend.

The SAPS in uMkhanyakude District said most transgressors were driving under the influence of alcohol.

Roadblocks, stop-and-searches, as well as co-ordinated operations for suspects of other crimes were held around the district.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize said SAPS members would continue to be out in force over the remainder of the festive season to ensure the safety of travellers.

“People driving under the influence of alcohol and the issuing of road traffic fines; that is what we dealt with mostly during these holidays,” said Mkhize.

He said some suspects were also arrested for dealing in dagga, while operations tracing suspects of other crimes yielded positive results, with the arrest of suspects in connection with murder, and some for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Meanwhile, Mkhize said Police Minister Bheki Cele, together with the national commissioner of police are expected to visit the border gate at Manguzi on Friday.
