Beach warning amid expected high tides

Bathers, paddlers, sailors and anglers are urged to exercise extreme caution during this period

Beach-goers are warned of high spring tides that may result in stronger than normal rip currents around the coastline as of today (Wednesday), leading into the new year.

The NSRI has urged bathers, paddlers, sailors and anglers to exercise extreme caution during this period as the full moon spring tide increases.

“Public at beaches and along the coastline will experience the two daily high tides which will be noticeably higher than normal and the two daily low tides which will be noticeably lower than normal, as well as stronger than normal rip currents at places around the coastline,” said the NSRI.

They further encourage bathers to swim only at beaches protected by lifeguards.

“Inland water users are also urged to be cautious – although not affected by spring tide on inland waters, the increase in water-related emergencies is of concern.

“We appeal to everyone in and around coastal and inland waterways to have safety top of mind,” said the NSRI.
