Khumalo was on Thursday morning speaking at a briefing to Cogta MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, district municipality Mayor Siphile Mdaka and Mtubatuba Mayor Mxolisi Mthethwa about the department’s donation of farming supplies to the development agency.

The agency has welcomed the handover of farming supplies worth R10-million, including two tractors, made by Cogta.

Sithole-Moloi said it is important that district development agencies work with other stakeholders to ensure local economic development comes to fruition.

This will attract investors to their respective areas and create jobs, all with the aim of addressing the high levels of unemployment and poverty.

“For us to have local economic development, we must invest in infrastructure,” said Sithole-Moloi, adding that it was vital that agricultural communities grow from planting and farming to processing of their produce and owning markets.

Mdaka said another means of creating jobs is to move businesses from the informal to the formal sector, and that local economic development interventions must be sustainable.
