Hlabisa community plight comes to an end

FOR the first time in history, residents of the eSixeni area in kwaHlabisa will be able to travel freely from their residences to town, even during heavy rains.

This after Big 5 Hlabisa Mayor Comfort Khumalo officiated a sod-turning to mark the official construction of a R3.9-million bridge.

Once built, the bridge will allow motorists to cross the river during heavy rains.

Speaking on behalf of residents, Induna Mthembeni Mhlongo said, during heavy rains no one can cross the river.

“When there are heavy rains, the river overflows, making it difficult for motorists and schoolchildren to cross. We become homebound. Emergency services like ambulances and the police are unable to cross.

“We are so excited to see that our plight is coming to an end. The road itself is destroyed because there is no bridge,” said Mhlongo.
Mayor Khumalo said his municipality hired a local female contractor to carry out the work.

“The construction of this bridge will render many job opportunities for unemployed residents,” he said.
