Expired foods seized

In some of these spaza shops they found goods that had passed their sell-by dates

On a mission to rid supermarkets and spaza shops of expired foodstuffs, two political parties within the Mtubatuba Municipality council last week conducted inspections at various establishments.

The UDM on Wednesday set its sights on spaza shops based in various sections of KwaMsane township.

Councillor Remington Mazibuko said in some of these spaza shops they found goods that had passed their
sell-by dates.

Mazibuko said what was of great concern was that some of these items had been purchased from a popular cash and carry retailer in town.

“We found biscuits, snacks and mayonnaise, but it was mostly snacks,” he said.

Unable to quantify these goods, Mazibuko said it was ‘quite a lot’.

He said the shopkeepers welcomed them with open arms, and that the recovered goods were buried in a hole ‘because health regulations say that is what must be done’.

On Monday and Tuesday, EFF leadership embarked on a similar campaign in Mtubatuba town, at one of the retailers run by foreign nationals.

It was reported that the EFF contingent uncovered tonnes of goods that had passed their sell-by dates, and that these included chips, cold drinks and juices.

The EFF also inspected popular retail shops, one at Mtuba Mall, where goods of this nature were also recovered. One juice box had a best before date of 7 August 2023.
