Conman targets police job applicants

Police said they have received numerous complaints from local job seekers

Police have urged all job seekers who applied for jobs with the SAPS to refrain from entertaining a bogus Captain Buthelezi, who is demanding cash from unsuspecting victims.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said any applicant who receives a phone call from the so-called Captain Buthelezi must report the call to their nearest police station.

“We have received numerous complaints from people complaining they received a call from this man, telling them their applications were successful but that they must pay R3 000,” said Shangase.

“He asks them to send the money through supermarket money markets. This conman also advises his victims that after depositing the money they must go to Empangeni SAPS to fit their police uniform.

“We distance ourselves from this man. This is a scam, and police work is not for sale. We do not have a Captain Buthelezi at Empangeni police station,” said Shangase.

He urged applicants to be vigilant and refrain from entertaining this non-existent captain.

“We urge our youth to not pay anything. Anyone who receives such a call must immediately report it to the nearest police station. This man is using different cellphone numbers. He or she must just hand over that number to the police quickly,” he said.
