Big rains expected across Zululand region

Richards Bay residents have already endured a day-long power outage owing to last night's rain

Wet weather can be expected overnight and into tomorrow (Tuesday) as the SA Weather Service issues a level 6 warning for disruptive rains.

The impact-based warning is in place from 1am until 5pm on Tuesday.

Areas affected are Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mtubatuba, uMhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze and uMlalazi.

“Heavy rain leading to flooding of roads, bridges and settlements is expected over parts of King Cetshwayo and uMkhanyakude districts tomorrow,” said SAWS.

This as showers and thunder showers are forecast for the whole of KZN.

Impacts include fast-flowing streams and rivers, which could endanger lives; major disruption to traffic flow owing to potential flooding of major roads; disruption to essential services including water and electricity, and damage to mud-based houses.

“If possible, avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where the water is above your ankles,” said SAWS.

“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground; inside buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level; switch off electricity at the supply point to the building; in rural areas, protect or relocate livestock to higher ground.”

Richards Bay residents have already endured a day-long power outage owing to last night’s rain which caused a fault to the 132kv line.

Most of the town’s electricity was restored by mid-afternoon on Monday.
