WATCH: Water tanker reinforcements as Richards Bay woodchip inferno continues unabated

There appears to be no end in sight for the fire that has consumed the Richards Bay woodchip mill along the John Ross highway since yesterday (Saturday) afternoon.

While the threat to at-risk properties in the nearby suburb of Arboretum Extension was quelled late last night, the blaze at the source appeared no less intense at 6.45am on Sunday.

Water tanker reinforcements were brought in from as far afield as Melmoth.

Although there was some rain during the night, it was nowhere near enough to dampen the blaze.

According to a statement issued by the City of uMhlathuze this (Sunday) morning, the fire appears to have started at a conveyor belt.

The municipality said the current focus remains on monitoring and addressing the ongoing fire at NCT, which is expected to ‘require additional time, possibly even days, for complete containment’.

City Mayor, Xolani Ngwezi has commended the collaborative response from concerned agencies and the community.

Mondi Fire Services, Transnet Fire Services, South 32, RBM, and other private companies have been part of efforts to extinguish the blaze.

“Gratitude is extended to the dedication and support demonstrated by everyone, including industries, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), and individuals who worked tirelessly under extreme conditions to control and contain the fire.

“We urge the community to remain at home, stay vigilant, and report any signs of fire to the fire services,” said Ngwezi.
