WATCH: Fire breaks out at Richards Bay woodchip mill

The city and Port of Richards Bay fire departments are on scene

A massive fire broke out at the NCT Woodchip mill in Richards Bay this (Saturday) afternoon.

City of uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue Department and Port of Richards Bay fire fighters quickly responded to the burning woodchip stockpile as the blaze had extended to the conveyor belt system at the mill.

Richards Bay Clean Air Association (RBCAA) has warned that wind direction is predicted to turn southerly at 5pm.
“The smoke from the NCT fire which is currently being carried towards Hillside, is likely to blow towards the residential areas.
“We recommend that residents, especially those in Arboretum Extension, take the necessary precautions,” said Sandy Camminga.
