Hitchhiking attacks on the rise across Zululand

Attacks on hitchhikers are on the rise in the Zululand region

‘Be vigilant’ is the appeal from local police as attacks on hitchhikers are on the rise in the Zululand region.

According to the police, both hitchhiking and offering lifts to strangers increase vulnerability to crime and criminal activity.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said, “There were two recent incidents in King Cetshwayo District; one in eShowe and the other in Gingindlovu.”

He said both victims were female hitchhikers, and both were drugged with an unknown substance to render them unconscious.

“The suspect(s) then proceeded to rape the victims, and left them in the bushes either dead or alive.

“As the police, we are pleading with Zululanders to refrain from hitchhiking altogether.

“We understand citizens are under economic pressure, however, they need to ensure their safety is not compromised,” concluded Shangase.

Hitchhiking safety tips

Firstly, ALWAYS try to utilise the public transportation options available.

Always trust your instinct (if something feels, strange do not get into the vehicle).

Take photos of the vehicle registration number, the interior and exterior.

Try to discreetly take a photo of the driver and send it to friends and family.

Turn on your live location to send to your family and friends.

If possible, never hitchhike alone – there is strength in numbers.
