Brazen broad daylight cable theft in Richards Bay

The City of uMhlathuze has urged residents of Richards Bay to be their eyes and ears, and to report any suspicious activity in and around the city.

This after a spike in cable theft, with more than 2.5km of streetlight cable stolen in July and August alone, from Arboretum, Birdswood, Brackenham, Richards Bay CBD and Meerensee.

According to the municipality, replacement value of this cable amounts to more than R1-million.

Low voltage cable used for streetlights appears to be the target, as criminals disguise themselves as contractors, wearing overalls and reflective jackets to appear as workers doing a legitimate job.

“There was one case where a member of the public took notice and the criminal was apprehended and arrested,” said the city.

“We wish to appeal to all residents to be vigilant and report anything that looks suspicious.

“When people are working on streetlights, the vehicles on site will have a City of uMhlathuze logo unless it is a contractor performing the work.”

The municipality said, going forward, contractors will be required to place an information board where work is being carried out, to inform the public that the job in question is approved by the city.

“Suspicious situations can be reported to the call centre on 035 9075000, 0800 222827 or the relevant ward councillor.”
