Hefty diesel, petrol prices announced

Both grades of petrol are set to increase on Wednesday

Diesel users are set to fork out R2.84 cents per litre more at the fuel pumps as of Wednesday, 6 September.

This was announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy on Monday.

Both grades of petrol are also set to increase by R1.71 cents per litre, while the price of illuminating paraffin is being hiked by R2.78/ per litre.

These hefty increases are owing to, among others, international oil prices and the rand/dollar exchange rate.

“High prices of petrol are a result of low inventories and refinery outages, which affected the production of blending components used in summer grade petrol, making it more expensive to produce.

“Diesel and paraffin prices increased because of lower shipments of Russia’s Urals crude oil, which is rich in middle distillates, as well as rising demand of middle distillates ahead of the winter season in the northern hemisphere,” said Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe.
