Endurance athlete to share inspiration at fundraiser

Global endurance athlete and human rights activist Nontuthuko Mgabhi always challenges herself to push boundaries

Always following her goal to be of service for the greater good of humanity, global endurance athlete and human rights activist Nontuthuko Mgabhi always challenges herself to push boundaries, rise above limits and break barriers.

The industrial psychologist who is GM of HR at Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) will be guest speaker at this year’s Tea on the Terrace fundraiser hosted by the ZO’s charity arm Dice (Do I Care Enough?).

To be held on Saturday, 9 September at the Jabulani Dome at Umfolozi Resorts, Mgabhi will share her inspirational journey under the theme ‘Go Beyond’.

Tea on the Terrace is an annual fundraiser that celebrates the resilience of cancer survivors, patients and families, and raises funds towards the treatment of cancer patients and other Dice projects.

The 36 year old has never backed down from a challenge, always willing to go wherever her true calling to serve has taken her.

Growing up in a deep rural village of Mseleni, Mghabi lives up to her name, which means ‘development’.

Her parents believed she would fulfill her part in bringing about much needed development both at home and in the community at large.

An avid runner, Mgabhi became the first female from Africa to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven consecutive days in February 2020.

“I undertook this challenge to raise funds for the betterment of the education of 657 children at Khiphinkunzi Primary School in the rural village of Dukuduku outside Mtubatuba,” she said.

“Through this marathon, we raised enough funds to build five new classrooms.

“In October 2022, I ran the Marathon Des Sables, which is dubbed the toughest footrace on earth, running 250km in the Sahara Desert in a selfsupported race.

“Funds that were raised were used to build toilet facilities and an administration block for a primary school in need.”

Mgabhi continues to use her running to facilitate social change and, in March 2023, ran Ultra Asia, a 160km race in Vietnam, to raise 500 school shoes for children in need.

She believes in developing talent and unleashing potential to enable people to do their best and find their purpose.

Career As the youngest ever executive appointed by RBCT, Mghabi oversees the strategic imperative and execution of both HR and corporate affairs.

She is passionate about organisational development (talent management, precisely) and industrial relations.

She holds a Masters Degree in Industrial Psychology and a Post Graduate Diploma in General Management from the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin, Germany.
