Two more die one week after Hluhluwe-iMfolozi school bus accident

The bus was carrying pupils on a field trip to Durban

The driver of the bus involved in last Tuesday’s fatal crash has died, as has a seventh child, in hospital this week.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize said the bus driver died in Ngwelezana Hospital on Monday, and the pupil died on Wednesday morning at Hlabisa Hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to eight.

The bus, which was carrying pupils from Mchitheki Secondary School in Nongoma on a field trip to Durban, crashed on the R618 ‘corridor road’ that runs through Hluhluwe-Mfolozi Park (HiP).

The driver reportedly lost control and the bus overturned. Five pupils were declared dead at the scene, with a sixth pupil later dying in hospital.
