‘Bogus cop’ fraud victims called to open cases

The matter was raised after a case was opened in Richards Bay

The Provincial Commercial Crimes Investigation unit based in Richards Bay is leading investigations into a bogus cop defrauding businesses of funds for fake charity work.

The matter was raised after a case was opened in Richards Bay, where a con artist using the alias of a ‘Captain Govender’ approached business owners appealing for funds to purchase bread and groceries for needy families.

It is believed the perpetrator contacts businesses telephonically and requests them to send cash via instant money.

The police will never request funds or donations in this manner, and members of the public are warned not to send any money using these methods.

Heading up the unit, Lieutenant Colonel VC Pillay urged members of the public who have fallen victim to this scam to contact 067 6814666 to report the matter and have a case opened.
