WATCH: College campus residence closed after ‘bad food’ protest

Campus manager allegedly slapped during student protest

Hundreds of uMfolozi TVET College students are stranded following a violent protest over food and water issues at the eShowe campus yesterday (Monday).

Pandemonium ruled campus when angry students, tired of ‘unhealthy food’ and a lack of water supply, took matters to the streets.

According to reports, students burnt materials and allegedly slapped a campus manager, as well as assaulted a security guard during the demonstration.

Police were called to disperse the angry crowd. Protest action resulted in campus being closed until further notice.

“We have been eating terrible food, and we are tired of eating chicken every day for two weeks. The catering is terrible, we have no water and we are living in terrible conditions,” said a 21-year-old student living on-campus.

In a letter directed to campus’ Local Student Representative Council (LSRC), acting principal EPL du Toit said management would discuss catering matters with the LSRC.

She also pleaded with the students to follow proper procedures before taking matters to the streets, as well as condemned any form of destruction of property.
