Winter chess action in Empangeni this weekend

Chess players are invited to participate in this weekend's King Cetshwayo Winter Chess Open

Chess players are invited to participate in this weekend’s King Cetshwayo Winter Chess Open taking place in Empangeni.

Hosted by the King Cetshwayo Chess Association, registration takes place between 7am and 8.30am before the first round begins at 9am on Saturday.

The two-day tournament takes place at Empangeni High Hall on 31 Farewell Road, Fairview.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three players in the U8 to u16 categories.

The best female participants in all age categories will also receive accolades.

Prize money will be awarded to the top 3 open section overall winners (U18, u20 and adult).

“King Cetshwayo Chess Association continues to develop our talented chess players to be active through chess tournaments,” said King Cetshwayo Chess Association Chairperson Lisa Griffiths.

“Our tournament is open to all ages and we also open our doors to beginners, who do need some exposure.”

Registration must be done early with the entry form and copy of birth certificate emailed to lisaceraldegriffiths@gmail.com on/before 28 July.

The entry fee is R100 for

U8 – u16 entrants and R110 for U18, U20 and adult competitors.
