Government, businesses unite to repatriate remains of Zululander

A number of people have committed to assist in bringing the aspiring neurosurgeon home

Tragedy befell the Myeni family from Utrecht when their beloved daughter Snegugu Ntobeko Myeni a final-year medical student studying in the Philippines, died at the airport just before heading home.

With limited funds, the family was unable to pay for Snegugu’s remains to be repatriated home, prompting a social media video by her mother, Lindiwe.

After hearing about the family’s plight, the government and businesses have committed to assist in bringing the aspiring neurosurgeon home to her final resting place.

KZN Acting Premier Nomagugu Simelane said a government delegation has visited the family to discuss details about funeral arrangements.

“These are very tragic developments. It is disheartening to consider that Snegugu was on the cusp of coming home to contribute towards the betterment of the lives of her fellow compatriots in her chosen specialist medical field,” said Simelane.

“We know that, with each passing day, the waiting becomes more difficult for the Myeni family, and we will work tirelessly to ensure the mortal remains of their beloved daughter are brought home for burial by the family, friends and community.

“The government will engage with authorities in the Philippines to ensure Snegugu’s remains are brought home in a dignified manner.”

Zululand District Municipality Cllr Thulasizwe Buthelezi said he was touched when he heard the tragic story.

“With the assistance of business people from Zululand, Icobelethu has paid to bring the body back home so the family can give their daughter a dignified funeral.

“We have met with the family to offer our condolences and support,” he said, adding that the intervention would not impact government processes.
