Mahlatsi was known as a man who changed South African television

Zululand actors, directors and producers were met with shock and grief on Monday when one of their role models, fellow filmmaker and director Teboho Mahlatsi (52), passed away.

His death has left the industry devastated after he became a role model for many from his early days of Yizo Yizo in the late 90s.

According to reports, the legendary director died after a long battle with cancer.

Following his passing, condolences are pouring in from all walks of life – with many celebrating his life and massive contribution to the television industry.

Zululand-born actor Mthandeni Mbambo told the ZO that Mahlatsi was not just a role model but a man who opened up the industry for many.

“He told authentic South African stories that resonate with us as an audience. Many of us were inspired by his work as children when we watched Yizo Yizo.

“I am fortunate to have been part of his telenovela Isibaya, and I know he will be remembered for a very long time,” said Mbambo.

Film director and actress Nokulunga ‘Noofah’ Ntuli also expressed her deepest condolences, saying Mahlatsi was one of her role models from whom she learnt a lot.

“What a great loss. As young directors, we looked up to him and learnt from his creativity, which was one of the best in the world,” she said.

Mahlatsi was known as a man who changed South African television when he introduced the controversial drama Yizo Yizo.

Over the years, the renowned director worked on some of the biggest productions that he co-created under his production company, The Bomb Shelter.

He was part of the creators of Isibaya, Jacob’s Cross, Ayeye, Shaka Ilembe and Back of The Moon.
