Youth empowered through uMkhanyakude police awareness campaign

Stakeholders warned the youth about the dangers of using drugs

SAPS in uMkhanyakude District this week hosted a variety of awareness campaigns across the region, focusing on youth empowerment on Tuesday.

Held at Cezwana Youth Skills Development Centre in Jozini, the session was attended by about 200 youth.

Stakeholders included SAPS, the Department of Community Safety, LifeLine and Jozini Municipality.

The attendees heard how the stakeholders would contribute towards youth empowerment through creating job opportunities.

It was mentioned that the high unemployment rate, as well as substance abuse, are contributing factors in the high levels of crime plaguing society.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize said all stakeholders committed to creating job opportunities for the youth, which would assist in reducing the crime rate.

“Awareness was also made on drugs and substance abuse and GBV,” said Mkhize.

He added that a drugs and substance abuse campaign was held at the Mbazwana multi-purpose centre, also on Tuesday.

“Mbazwana police led an awareness campaign with the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, CPF, local traffic department, departments of social development, health and education, as well as the Youth Desk, Spiritual Crime Prevention and Sanca.

“Stakeholders warned the youth about the dangers of using drugs, especially when they can incur permanent damage to their brains, and that drug abuse is the contributing factor in the increasing crime rate.”
