‘Runaway bakkie’ causes quite a stir

The bakkie drove over his foot while he was attempting to restart it

It was a close call for Empangeni resident Ian Howell last week, who had to take evasive action when he was almost run over by his ‘runaway bakkie’.

Howell was push-starting his car after it cut out on the crest of a hill in Pasteur Road when he had to dive into the bushes and let his vehicle free wheel to the bottom of the embankment.

This after the bakkie drove over his foot while he was attempting to restart it.

Within moments of the incident, passersby, including Martinus Fick, Ernest de Waal, Pastor Lincoln Lavans, Liam Lavans and Gamas Chetty, stopped to offer assistance to the fortunately uninjured, yet shocked Howell.

Alpha towing also attended the scene, using a rollback tow truck to retrieve Howell’s stricken vehicle.

“I am grateful for the good Samaritans who came to my aid, and I want to say thank you to all who assisted me. By God’s grace, I sustained no injuries,” said Howell.
