Residents urged to be vigilant

Grobbelaar encouraged residents to report non-functional street lights.

Empangeni CPF chairperson Zonita Grobbelaar has urged residents to be more vigilant as winter approaches.

“When it comes to wintertime, people need to change their routine. They must always observe their surroundings.

“If someone spots something suspicious, they must immediately contact a neighbour or the CPF. They must stop being brave because that might lead to unnecessary injuries or death.

“Residents must always ensure their alarm systems are in good working order, and must always confirm with their security company that their alarm signals reach the control room. They must do this at least twice a year,” she said.

Grobbelaar further explained that it is imperative to check whether or not the panic button works.

“If a person realises something is not where it was when they left [for work] in the morning, or the fence is damaged, they must ask for assistance.

“They must refrain from just driving onto their premises because that might lead to a confrontation with criminals. It’s better to be safe than sorry. People must stop being brave, they might be killed,” she said.

Grobbelaar further encouraged residents to report non-functional street lights.

“When reporting a street light that is not working, people must provide the City of uMhlathuze official with the street name and street light number so it will be easy for them to get there and fix it on time,” she said.
