Zululander leads mass Yoga Day celebrations

At least 300 people from Zululand will join the event

Thousands are expected to descend on the Durban Amphitheatre this Sunday when the Sivananda World Peace Foundation hosts its 9th annual International Day of Yoga on Sunday from 8.30am to 11.30am.

In partnership with the KZN Provincial Government, National Department of Health, and eThekwini Municipality, the Sivandanda Foundation led by philatropist lshwar Ramlutchman Mabheka Zulu confirmed at least 300 people from Zululand will join the event, which expects to attract about 3 000 from across KZN.

Leading up to this event, ongoing yoga programmes were held in rural schools and at various religious institutions with focus on promoting healthy lifestyles through physical activities such as yoga.

Ramlutchman predicts the exponential growth of yoga, particularly as a result of the social and economic turbulence following the pandemic, the looting spree and political unrest, and the devastating floods.

“For these very challenges, we want to mitigate the social ills and growing disunity among culturally diverse citizens by travelling through various communities to promote yoga.”

“By the time we showcase yoga on a broader scale, we hope to have a volunteering legion of followers, teachers, and new members to demonstrate yoga to benefit various communities.

“Yoga is a source of inspiration that binds us all as a nation. lt teaches us to remain calm through turbulent times,” said Ramlutchman.
