Illegal dumping rife in Richards Bay suburb

Vacant plots, greenbelts, open spaces and pathways are littered daily

Illegal dumping on vacant plots and in public spaces in Ward 26, especially Brackenham, is an ongoing challenge.

This is according to Ward Councillor Ray Govender who has appealed to residents to refrain from disposing of their rubbish, rubble and garden refuse in the suburb.

While the situation has escalated to alarming levels, Govender said they continue to create awareness and deter members of the public from illegal dumping, by continuously informing them of the hefty fines and urging residents to be the eyes and ears of the municipality by reporting all acts of illegal dumping.

“We encourage community members to continue to report these illegal acts and take pictures of those breaking the law.

“Vacant plots, greenbelts, open spaces and pathways are littered daily, and we find garden refuse being dumped in our community parks.

“Some residents have dumped black bags with household waste along the suburb’s streets.

“Those busy with home renovations, construction or repairs also use the outside of their property to dispose of waste, and this is not acceptable.

“The fine for illegal dumping is R5 000 and we warn residents that if they are charged, that amount will be added to their utility bills and they will be forced to pay it for contravening the law.

“We want our residents to work with us in keeping our community and city clean, and need this illegal dumping to stop,” said Govender.
