WATCH: Mzingazi residents demand murder accused be denied bail

The body of the young woman was found in the bushes near a church in Khondweni

MZINGAZI community members are holding a peaceful protest outside the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court this morning (Friday) calling for a murder suspect to be denied bail.

The man charged with the murder of a young woman is appearing in court today for bail application.

Mzingazi CPF representative Sharon Mdletshe confirmed that community members had reported seeing the body of a female discarded in some bushes last Tuesday morning.

“The body was found in the bushes near a church in Khondweni and, on inspection, she was found to be naked and her body had been battered and bruised,” said Mdletshe.

“A few metres away from the scene a duvet drenched in blood was discovered and the early morning dew left a clear trail showing where the body could have been dragged with the duvet.

“While the body could not be seen from one side of the fence, residents at the opposite end had a clear view when they opened their front doors.

“The trail led back to an area that accommodated several ‘rent-a-rooms,” said Mdletshe.

“Through listening to conversations at the scene, CPF members gathered information [on which they] followed up, leading police to later arrest the suspect,” she said.

As the suspect is known in the community and had allegedly attempted to lure another young woman to his residence, members of the community are calling for bail to be opposed.

Richards Bay SAPS communications officer Lieutenant Colonel Debbie Ferreira confirmed that a case of murder has been opened for investigation.
