MEC condemns shooting of employee in Empangeni

The employee was ambushed outside a fast-food outlet

KZN Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Super Zuma has condemned the shooting of one of his departmental employees in Empangeni.

The employee was ambushed by suspects as he drove into an eatery establishment on Tuesday afternoon at Empangeni Rail.

“Fortunately, the employee is recovering well in the hospital after he was shot,” said Zuma.

Zuma confirmed the employee was on duty when the incident took place.

“The employee was on a rabies vaccination drive in the Empangeni area when he was ambushed by the suspects. I urge the community of KZN to rally [against] this kind of crime as it affects service delivery,” said Zuma.

He said public servants often put their lives at risk in service of the community, and such criminality negatively impacts their work morale.

Mounties EMS attended the scene, and stabilised the man before transporting him to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

According to paramedics on scene, the man was shot in the shoulder, and the bullet exited through his forearm.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase confirmed a case of attempted murder has been opened.
