Shopping centre fire in Nongoma

One of the town's shopping centres caught alight, possibly as a result of load-shedding

Two stores in Nongoma CBD were badly damaged in a fire that started early this morning (Wednesday).

Nongoma Mayor Albert Mncwango confirmed that preliminary investigations show the stores in one of the town’s shopping centres caught alight, possibly as a result of load-shedding.

“We can confirm there was a fire at [the centre], where some of the shops burnt down in the early morning.

However, our disaster management team was able to contain it,” said Mncwango.

He said management has closed the centre as the investigators are still establishing the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire.

“At this stage, we cannot specify the monetary damage as the centre is yet to quantify the damage to the building. The occupants will also add how much stock they have lost,” said Mncwango.
