City works to take over load-shedding in eSikhaleni and surrounds

These respective areas endure longer hours of power cuts as a result of being directly load-shed by Eskom

The uMhlathuze Municipality says it is forging ahead with efforts to take over the function of load-shedding in eSikhaleni, eNseleni and surrounding areas.

These respective areas endure longer hours of power cuts as a result of being directly load-shed by Eskom.

The city said it is exhausting all efforts and continues to engage the power utility on this matter to ensure these affected areas within uMhlathuze are released from the current standing arrangement.

“We are aware that the Eskom load-shedding programme makes the affected communities suffer more than residents residing in areas where load-shedding is done by the city,” said uMhlathuze Communications Manager, Bongani Gina.

The city said a letter was sent to Eskom, which led to discussions of handling load-shedding in all of uMhlathuze’s area of supply.

Speaking during a media briefing in January, City Mayor Xolani Ngwezi said the process ‘may require time because the network configuration will need to be amended’.

The mayor has, however, vowed not to rest until this function is restored to the city.
