Nongoma schoolgirl stabbed to death in front of brother

According to a close family friend, Londiwe Zondo (23) was killed by her ex-boyfriend

In another horrific case of GBV, a Grade 11 pupil at Nongoma’s Phumuzuzulu High School was stabbed several times by her ex-boyfriend while on the way to school on Wednesday.

Her 14-year-old brother witnessed the attack which left the young woman bleeding and dying at the roadside in Ngoqongweni area, Osuthu outside Nongoma.

According to a close family friend, Londiwe Zondo (23) was killed by her ex-boyfriend, Nhlanhla Qwabe – a man who was out on bail having allegedly raped a disabled girl last year. Zondo, her brother, and a schoolfriend were waiting for a taxi when Qwabe arrived.

He chased Zondo, stabbing her in the back and upper body before fleeing the scene.

Qwabe was found dead later that day, his body was found hanging from a tree in the nearby bushes.

A heartbroken mother, Thandekile Ndwandwe (41), confirmed her daughter broke up with Qwabe a few weeks ago.

“I can’t tell what led to their breakup, but when I asked my daughter about it, she said she has already moved on,” said Ndwandwe.

“Last weekend, the situation became very tense. His mother approached me and begged me to persuade my daughter to change her mind. I refused to involve myself in that.”

Ndwandwe explained that Zondo failed matric last year and decided to repeat Grade 11 so she could redo matric next year. “She was taking education seriously.

She knew that without a proper education, life would be difficult for her.

“I am hurt by the way my daughter was killed. Nothing will ever replace her. My son is traumatised after witnessing the incident.”

A close family friend added: “[Qwabe] was arrested last year for raping a disabled girl, and his bail condition was that he must not be found near the victim’s residence.”
