Repairs to collapsed R618 road under way
Heavy vehicles, such as trucks, are not allowed to make use of the usable lane
Repair work has begun on the collapsed lane of the R618 road which connects Mtubatuba and St Lucia.
The left lane of the road collapsed, although no injuries were reported.

It’s reported that the heavy rains at the weekend resulted in rising levels of the Umphathe River which subsequently eroded a section of the R618.
Officials from the Mtubatuba Traffic Department, community members, and the St Lucia Ratepayers Association were working hand-in-hand to assist with the flow of traffic on the road.
Vaughan Christie of the ratepayers’ association said the damaged section of the road had been cordoned off, with a stop-and-go traffic management operation underway.
“Community members used a TLB to unblock culverts to relieve water pressure and the remaining one lane was saved from also collapsing,” Christie said.
He added that the department of transport was at the scene repairing the road.
It was reported that heavy vehicles, such as trucks, are not allowed to make use of the usable lane.
Locals, in particular children, are urged to refrain from swimming in the river.
