NRB Diski Boyz cause major upset

The Richards Bay FC U23 side caused an upset win over Mamelodi Sundowns

Superb defensive organisation saw the Richards Bay FC U23 side cause an upset win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday.

Emulating the senior Rich Boyz side with superb cover, and doubling up on attackers when necessary, the defensive unit held the fort in the first half as they absorbed plenty of pressure, frustrating the over-confident Masandawana attackers into mistakes.

With no goals for either side to show, the second half began with the points still up for grabs, and it was the Bay side which began turning the tide, largely due to the substitutions and tactical changes made by the technical team.

They mounted ever more attacks and now it was Sundowns who found themselves stretched at the back.

It was still looking like a stalemate until the 90th minute when Mkhize raced down the right wing, cut inside and laid on a perfect pass for awaiting teammate Nzuzo, whose simple tap-in was unnecessary as Sundowns captain

Khumalo sliced the ball into his own net in a desperate attempt to clear.

Lungelo Bhengu was named Richards Bay’s man of the match.

Based on the second-half performance, Richards Bay were well worth their fourth win of the season; and one hoped it was a positive premonition for the senior side’s Nedbank Cup encounter with the same opponents.
