Suspected cellphone tower battery thief evades arrest in eShowe

The batteries were recovered and identified by a Vodacom investigating officer

A suspect accused of stealing cellphone tower batteries evaded arrest in eShowe on Saturday by running into thick bushes during a police chase.

eShowe SAPS reacted to a tip-off about a white bakkie that was seen carrying suspected tower batteries.

King Cetshwato Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said the information indicated that the batteries had been stolen at Plassislaer outside Pietermaritzburg and the vehicle was travelling towards eShowe on the R66.

The bakkie was abandoned by the suspect during the police chase

“The said vehicle was traced and found in the uMlalazi area where the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled into the nearby bush.

“When the police searched the vehicle, 12 red Huawei tower batteries were found at the back of the van, as well as a Nokia 105 cellphone,” said Shangase.

“The abandoned vehicle was confiscated and taken to eShowe police station. The recovered tower batteries were positively identified by a Vodacom investigating officer,” he said.
