Coal trucks can once again use the N2 through Pongola

National route reopened to heavy-duty vehicles following discussions between parties

AFTER a week-long closure to coal side-tipper trucks, the N2 through Pongola is once again open to these vehicles.

This after the route in question was last week closed to heavy-duty vehicles by community members who were concerned for the safety of their children as schools reopened for the academic year.

Discussions between the residents and truck owner representatives were held over the weekend, and ended amicably, according to Pongola Deputy Mayor Bheki Thwala.

“While we were not part of that meeting, we are happy that the matter was resolved amicably,” said Thwala.

“Some of the trucks are now back on our roads, and everything is running smoothly.”

During the 10-day closure of the N2 that began last Monday, coal-carrying side-tipper trucks were forced to use the R34/R66 routes as they made their way to the Port of Richards Bay.

This in turn placed pressure on this route, with commuters and residents in the Melmoth area complaining of heavy traffic, an increase in accidents and rapid deterioration of the road.
