Tips to help you save on electricity

This as more than 30 electrical faults were reported across the city in the last 15 hours.

UMhlathuze Head of Section for Electricity and Energy Services, Dolf Marais shares some ways residents can help ease pressure on the city’s power system and safeguard home appliances.
1. As load shedding starts, for those at home, switch off all plugs, aircons, geysers and stove on the DB box and just leave light plugs and light switches on so that you will know when power is back on.
Then switch the DB box on after 5 minutes.
This will help in three ways:
• Save you appliances from power surges
•Reduce load on the transformers as we switch on
• Prevent further outages
“In addition to this, it will help if pool pumps can be switched off during the day and run times be moved to midnight hours (24h00-5h00).
“Businesses can contribute by running only the necessary aircons and not all of them as we are used to,” said Marais.
