Deputy mayor urges Pongola residents to stop illegal protest

Deputy Mayor weighs in on, on-going load-shedding protests

PONGOLA Deputy Mayor Bheki Thwala has urged community members complaining about the ongoing load-shedding to stop blocking the N2.

Thwala made this plea on Monday following a protest along the N2 at the Godlwayo area near Itshelejuba Hospital, which brought the national route to a standstill for all vehicles.

“Members of the community need to desist from such protests. Power cuts are a national issue. It has formed part of our lives for years. A few weeks ago, we saw power cuts becoming worse.

“So it is very painful to see so many residents protesting over power cuts in our area,” he said.

Frustrated residents stopped trucks, and Thwala urged them to refrain from this illegal activity.

“Communities do have a constitutional right to stage their protest, but this must be done lawfully after following all the proper and legal channels,” he said.
