Province to give update on intervention at Mtubatuba Municipality

The local municipality has been under administration since 2019 owing to financial and organisational challenges

THE fate of Mtubatuba Municipality will be outlined on Thursday when KZN Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Sihle Zikalala addresses council on the Section 139 municipal intervention.

This after council received a letter from Cogta on 5 January, stating the intervention – having the municipality under administration – would be extended until April.

In 2019, Cogta announced its intervention in the local municipality which was under ‘financial distress’ and facing ‘governance and organisational challenges’.

Mtubatuba councillors have been invited to Thursday’s council meeting scheduled for 10am, where a new administrator could possibly be introduced following the resignation of the current one.

Mtubatuba Municipality is no stranger to challenges, having been under provincial government administration for a number of years previously, before eventually being dissolved.
