Caution needed amid persistent heavy rainfall

Interior trough and persistent ridging high-pressure system the explanation for the heavy weather

ZULULANDERS are urged to follow advisories from disaster management units amid the heavy rain and severe weather as forecast by the SA Weather Service (SAWS).

This relates to expected torrential rainfall of more than 50mm over most of KZN, including King Cetshwayo and uMkhanyakude districts, over the next three days.

Nkosinathi Xulu, a lecturer at the University of Zululand’s Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, said the deluge is due to an interior trough and a persistent ridging high-pressure system over the southeastern parts of the subcontinent.

“The incessant rainfall may result in localised flooding, leading to infrastructure damage, impacts on the transport sector, electricity supply interruptions, and disruption of local economic and agricultural activities,” said Xulu.

He said this torrential rainfall comes at a time when the roads are particularly busy, which could result in delays and accidents on the muddy or slippery tarmac.

Two lives have already been claimed today (Friday) after two vehicles collided head-on on the N2 at Zinkwazi.
“Travellers are advised to exercise extra caution or delay their journey until after the rains subside,” said Xulu.
