City of uMhlathuze prioritises safety ahead of New Year celebrations

Numerous traffic fines were issued for a variety of offences

MORE than 200 vehicles were stopped and searched during a multi-disciplinary roadblock on the John Ross highway on Tuesday.

The roadblock was manned by SAPS, Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and CPF as part of tightening law enforcement ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

A number of traffic fines were issued to motorists for, among others, unlicensed vehicles, overloading, and driving without licences.

Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka joined city officials in inspecting vehicles

The officials were joined by Transport, Community Safety and Liasion MEC Sipho Hlomuka, King Cetshwayo District champion Bongi Sithole-Moloi, and uMhlathuze Mayor Xolani Ngwezi.

The operation included a walkabout at Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre.

Ahead of the roadblock, Mayor Ngwezi expressed appreciation to the officers and other stakeholders for fighting against crime and ensuring the safety of residents.

Law enforcement agencies gathered on the John Ross highway for the joint operation

“I thank you for making sure our communities, businesses, economy and properties are safe for 365 days,” said Ngwezi.

“We have not had any major incidents on our roads and I thank you for that. We understand that in ensuring we are safe and protected, you place your lives at risk.”

Ngwezi said they have approved a safer city crime prevention strategy that will heighten efforts to protect the city.
