WATCH: John Ross traffic congestion as backlog of trucks persists

The trucks occupied the fast lane on the Richards Bay-bound carriageway while others queued on the N2 off-ramp overnight

CITY of uMhlathuze motorists were again forced to navigate through a backlog of trucks that lined up along the John Ross highway this morning (Tuesday).

More than a hundred heavy-duty vehicles, mostly coal trucks, waiting to off-load cargo at the Port of Richards Bay, occupied the fast lane on the Richards Bay-bound carriageway, while others queued on the N2 off-ramp overnight.

The John Ross was severely backed up with rush-hour traffic as well as trucks from eSikhaleni right through to the Alton intersection.

The backlog comes amid heavy rains on Monday and a mass power outage that affected Meerensee, Mzingazi, the port and Small Craft Harbour.

City traffic officials were out on the busy intersections along the John Ross this morning, managing traffic flow while municipal officials are locked in a meeting with Transnet to find solutions to the trucking issues.

Last week, uMhlathuze Municipality stacked the trucks on the N2, allowing only 50 at a time to enter onto the John Ross; this pending a resolution to the current issues.
